There was more meteorological majesty in our skies today. I suspected early this morning that the cirrus clouds would once again provide a colourful display today, as they passed between the sun and those fortunate enough to observe from below, when I captured the early morning tails in the sky with my iPhone.
They did not disappoint. About midday thin icy clouds began to float by the sun and an array of colours began to appear as the sunlight passed through the ice crystals. This is a reasonably common occurrence here yet many people do not take the chance to simply stop and enjoy the performance happening overhead.
Four of the photographs feature aircraft and even a bird in the foreground. I took a few “wide shots” to give you the big picture in terms of the position of the clouds in the sky. I used a Canon SX-20 to take the photographs. I took about 140 photographs in all and I simply used the “Sunset” preset for all but a few of the images. None of the images were post processed other than a batch resize in Preview.

I love these pics and I was lucky to capture these twice… once in India and once in Australia. It thrills me no end to see this naturally occurring phenomenon and it’s sad that none of the people who were with me at that time shared my enthusiasm. Anyway…. a little research showed me that they were called ‘fire rainbows’. Love all your pics…. keep up the good work.
