This photo seems to capture much of Singapore for me, personally. The Housing Development Board Block dominates the scene. A new modern office skyscraper looms in the distance. In the foreground can be seen the rear of a row of shophouses. This photo was taken right in the heart of Singapore, Chinatown. The old and the new. The motifs on the sides of the HDB Blocks reflect efforts to cheer and brighten these amazing buildings. The washing can be seen hanging from the special poles, often made of bamboo, which protrude forth from the base of each kitchen window. If you look closely at the shophouses you can see vegetation growing tenaciously from the rooves and the guttering. |
