Emmie and Uncle John |
|
Recently,
I have been looking through my mother's collection of photographs,
cards, letters and newspaper clippings. Much of this material
had not really been shared with the family. I guess we were
all too busy, especially Mum as she raised seven kids. My
Mum passed away in 1994 and my dad had sorted all of Mum's
things into some photograph albums.
Among Mum's collection of things I found these three photograph's of my Uncle
John's Japanese wife. Her
name is Emmie, or Emiko. Uncle John was a professional soldier with the Australian
Army. He, to the best of my knowledge, saw time in Japan, Korea and Malaya during
the 1950's. Rather ignorantly, I thought her name was Kure
Inada when I saw the first photograph however that is the name of the photographic
studio in Japan. A kind researcher at the Australian War Memorial helped me out
there.
For reasons
I do not completely understand Uncle John was not able to bring Emmie back to
Australia. I am hoping to trace her family in Japan. I am still undecided about
that. It may be too traumatic or difficult. I believe I may have two cousins
in Japan that I have not met.
The first photograph was sent to my mother by Emmie. She wrote a short
note on the back. Later, my Dad wrote the additional details in blue
ink on the back
of the photograph. The Japanese characters on the back of the photograph say "To
Sheilda". Sheila is my mother's name. The other two photographs simply say "Emmy" on
the reverse.
